#7 Jointer Plane

At 560mm long, the Luban #7 Jointer Plane (Try Plane) is the longest of the general use hand planes. It is about 115mm longer than a #6 and weigh in at a hefty 4.7Kg. This is an excellent plane for jointing the edges of boards.

The long soles of Jointer Planes ride over the perpendicular or diagonal furrows left after Jack Planing (or on a smaller scale those left by your Jointer or Thicknesser). These Planes span the low spots and nip off the crests to bring the surface into true - hence the name "Try", "Trying" or "Truing" Plane.

Luban Bedrock Pattern Hand Planes, unlike the more common Bailey Pattern, have a full contact area between the body and the frog, hence the name "Bedrock". The frog can also be adjusted to widen or narrow the mouth of the plane without the need to remove the irons.

One simply loosens the two locking screws on either side at the back of the frog, adjusts the central screw to set your desired mouth opening, and then you nip up the side screws again. This system is easier, faster, much more accurate, and less likely to damage the cutting edge of your plane iron.

T10 Steel, also known as Tool Steel or High Speed Steel is the designation for an alloy made of Carbon steel and Tungsten (W1 in the United States of America). The alloy contains a higher tenor of Carbon compared to other Carbon Steels (about 1%) and a small fraction of silicon (0.35%).
