Woodworking Rasps

Rasps are coarse files with individually raised teeth for rapid stock removal in wood and soft metals.  Cabinet rasps refine workpieces, while half‑round rasps shape inside curves and flat surfaces.

What is the difference between a rasp and a file?
A rasp has individually raised teeth designed to remove wood quickly, making it ideal for shaping. A file has finer, uniform ridges for smoother finishing work. In woodworking, rasps are often used first, followed by files for refinement.

How do I avoid clogging the teeth of my rasp?
Use light, even strokes and clear the teeth regularly with a wire brush or file card. Avoid working on resinous or damp wood, as this can cause debris to stick more easily.

Can I use a woodworking rasp on materials other than wood?
While rasps can shape softer materials like soft plastics or foam, they’re not suited for metal or hard composites, which can dull the teeth quickly. Always choose a tool designed for the material you’re working with.
