Cold Chisels

Cold chisels cut and shape metal when struck with a hammer.  They are used for cutting bolts, splitting nuts and chipping off rivets.  Forged from tough steel, they stand up to repeated blows.

In contrast, woodworking chisels are thinner, sharper, and intended for precise cutting of softer materials like wood.

How should I use and maintain a cold chisel safely?

• Always wear safety goggles and gloves to protect from flying debris

• Hold the chisel securely and strike the head with a ball-peen or club hammer

• Avoid using a mushroomed or damaged chisel head—grind it flat to prevent chipping

• Keep the cutting edge sharp using a grinder or sharpening stone, maintaining the correct bevel (typically around 60°)
  Regular inspection and sharpening ensure safe operation and effective cutting performance.
