Wood Glues

Wood glues (PVA and aliphatic resin) create strong bonds in woodworking joints.  They dry clear and sand easily.  Waterproof variants like exterior PVA and Type II/III glues are ideal for outdoor furniture and joinery.

What types of wood glue are available and how do they differ?
Common types include PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glues for general woodworking, aliphatic resin glues (often called carpenter’s glue) for stronger bonds, polyurethane glues for waterproof applications, and hide glues for traditional or repair work.

How long should I clamp a wood joint when using glue?
Most PVA wood glues require clamping for 30 minutes to an hour, while full curing typically takes 24 hours. Stronger or specialty glues may need longer — always check the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can wood glue be stronger than the wood itself?
Yes. When applied correctly, many wood glues create a bond that’s stronger than the wood fibres, meaning the wood will break before the joint does. Proper surface preparation and clamping are key to achieving this.
