Taps & Dies

Tap and die sets cut internal and external threads in metal.  Taps create female threads in holes, while dies cut male threads on bolts and rods.  Proper lubrication and correct starting alignment are essential for clean threads.

What are taps and dies used for?
Taps are used to cut internal threads in holes, allowing bolts or screws to fit, while dies cut external threads on rods or bolts. Together, they’re essential for creating or repairing threaded fasteners.

How do I choose the right tap or die size?
Match the size to the desired thread diameter and pitch. Metric and imperial systems use different sizing standards, so check your measurement system before selecting the tool.

What’s the best way to use taps and dies for a clean thread?
Apply cutting fluid to reduce friction, turn the tool slowly, and back off every few turns to clear chips. This prevents binding, produces smoother threads, and extends the life of the tool.
