Rulers & Straight Edges

Rulers and straight edges provide reference edges for drawing and checking straight lines.  Stainless steel rules resist wear and include etched markings for accuracy.  Long straight edges check flatness and align machines.

What’s the difference between a ruler and a straight edge?
A ruler is primarily for measuring lengths and may include metric, imperial, or both scales. A straight edge is designed for drawing or checking straight lines and ensuring flatness or alignment, often without measurement markings.

Which material is best for rulers and straight edges?
Steel and aluminium offer durability and accuracy, while plastic is lightweight and cost-effective but less rigid. Wood is traditional but can warp over time if exposed to moisture.

How can I maintain accuracy when using these tools?
Keep edges free of nicks or dents, store them flat or hung to prevent bending, and avoid using them as cutting guides with knives, unless specifically reinforced for that purpose.
