Solvents, Strippers & Thinners

Solvents clean surfaces and remove adhesives, grease and oils.  Paint strippers soften and remove old finishes from wood and metal.  Thinners adjust the viscosity of paints, varnishes and lacquers for spraying or brushing.

What are solvents, strippers, and thinners used for?

  • Solvents dissolve or clean substances such as oils, grease, or adhesives.

  • Strippers are chemical solutions used to remove paint, varnish, or coatings.

  • Thinners are added to paints, varnishes, or adhesives to adjust consistency and improve application.

Are all solvents and thinners interchangeable?
No. Different products are formulated for specific uses — for example, mineral spirits, acetone, and lacquer thinner each work with different finishes. Using the wrong type can damage materials or affect drying times.

What safety precautions should I take when using these products?
Always work in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves and eye protection, and avoid open flames as many are highly flammable. Store them in sealed containers, away from heat and sunlight, and dispose of waste responsibly.
