Router Bits

Router bits shape edges, cut joinery and create profiles in wood, plastic and composites.  Straight bits, rabbeting bits, chamfer bits, round over bits and molding bits open endless possibilities.  Carbide cutters maintain sharpness and resist heat.  Always select the right shank size for your router.

What are router bits used for?
Router bits are cutting tools used with handheld or table-mounted routers to shape, profile, groove, and trim wood, plastic, and some soft metals. They’re essential in cabinetry, joinery, furniture making, sign carving, and decorative woodworking, allowing you to create edge profiles, dados, rabbets, inlays, and joinery cuts like dovetails or mortises.

What are the different types of router bits available?
Router bits come in a wide range of types and functions, including:

  • Straight bits – for grooves, dados, and mortising

  • Flush trim bits – for trimming laminate or pattern routing

  • Rounding-over and chamfer bits – for decorative edge shaping

  • Rabbeting bits – for cutting L-shaped steps

  • V-groove and cove bits – for decorative detailing

  • Joinery bits – like dovetail, finger joint, or mortise and tenon bits
    Bits are available in ¼″ and ½″ shank sizes, and in carbide-tipped or solid carbide for durability and cleaner cuts.

How do I choose the right router bit for my project?
Consider:

  • Application – choose the bit profile based on the cut or shape you need

  • Material – carbide-tipped bits are ideal for hardwoods, MDF, and laminate; HSS bits are better for softwoods

  • Router compatibility – match the shank size (¼″ or ½″) to your router collet

  • Cutting depth and diameter – ensure the bit is suitable for the scale of your work
    Always use router bits at the recommended speed, secure the workpiece, and feed the router in the correct direction for clean, safe results.
