Profile & Contour Gauges

Contour gauges duplicate complex shapes and profiles.  Press the plastic or metal pins against a moulding or irregular object and trace the outline onto your workpiece.  They’re invaluable for fitting flooring around pipes and scribing cabinets to uneven walls.

What is a profile or contour gauge used for?
A contour gauge is used to copy the exact shape of irregular edges or surfaces, making it easier to transfer the profile onto another material for cutting or fitting. It’s especially useful for flooring, tiling, woodworking, and pipe fitting.

How do I get the most accurate tracing with a contour gauge?
Press the gauge firmly but evenly against the object so the pins or teeth take the full shape. Lock the gauge (if it has a locking feature) before moving it, and trace carefully onto the workpiece.

Can contour gauges be used on both flat and curved surfaces?
Yes. They’re effective on curves, mouldings, and complex profiles. However, they’re less reliable on very small or intricate details where a scribing tool may give better precision.
