Plug Cutters

Plug cutters create matching wooden plugs to conceal screw heads or fill holes.  Cut plugs from scrap wood to match the grain and colour of your project for a seamless finish.

What are plug cutters used for?
Plug cutters are used to create custom wooden plugs or dowels from matching material. These plugs are then inserted into counterbored screw holes to hide fixings and provide a clean, seamless finish. They're ideal for cabinetry, furniture building, flooring, and fine woodworking, especially where aesthetics matter.

How do plug cutters differ from dowel or countersink bits?
Unlike dowel bits (which drill holes) or countersink bits (which create recesses for screw heads), plug cutters are designed to cut cylindrical wooden plugs from scrap material. These plugs are typically used to fill and conceal holes, blending in with the surrounding surface when sanded and finished.

How do I use a plug cutter properly?
Mount the plug cutter in a drill press for best control and accuracy (hand drills are not recommended). Use slow speeds and firm, steady pressure to cut clean plugs. Once cut, gently pry out the plug, align the grain with the hole, and glue it in place. After the glue sets, trim and sand the plug flush for a professional finish.
