Marking Pens & Pencils

Good quality pens and pencils produce clear, consistent lines on wood, metal, plastic and masonry.  Mechanical pencils, carpenter’s pencils and fine markers suit different materials and conditions.

What’s the difference between a carpenter’s pencil and a marking pen?
A carpenter’s pencil makes broad, durable marks on rough wood and is easy to sharpen to a chisel point for fine lines. Marking pens, on the other hand, create sharper, high-contrast lines and work well on smooth or finished surfaces.

Which marking tool works best on non-wood surfaces like metal or plastic?
Specialised permanent markers or fine-tip paint pens are best for metals, plastics, and ceramics. Standard graphite pencils don’t always leave a visible or lasting mark on these materials.

How can I make sure my markings stay visible until I finish my project?
Choose the right marking tool for the material — use soft-lead pencils for wood grain, fine-tip markers for metal, or chalk pencils for temporary markings. Protect the marks from smudging by avoiding excessive handling of the area.
