Honing and Sharpening Tools & Systems

Sharpening systems provide guided jigs and fixtures to hold blades at the correct angle during honing.  Systems like the Tormek and Work Sharp combine grinding wheels with honing guides and leather strops for repeatable, razor‑sharp edges.

What’s the difference between honing and sharpening?
Sharpening removes material from a dull edge to create a new, sharp cutting edge, while honing refines and polishes an already sharp edge, improving smoothness and prolonging sharpness between sharpenings.

What types of honing and sharpening systems are available?
Options include traditional whetstones, diamond stones, guided sharpening systems, honing guides, strops, and powered sharpening machines. The best choice depends on the type of blade and the level of precision required.

How do I know if my tool needs honing or full sharpening?
If the blade still cuts but feels slightly rough or drags, honing is usually enough. If it struggles to cut, slips, or has visible nicks or dull edges, a full sharpening is needed.
