Standard Block Plane

There are many things that separate this block plane from others

  • The first is that it has a 1/8" (3,2mm) thick by 1-5/8" (41mm) wide blade made from A2 Tool Steel, an alloy that takes a keener edge, is more resistant to chipping and dulls less easily than any of the other plane blades
  • As it is 50% thicker than most commercial plane blades, it is also more rigid
  • The second outstanding feature of the plane is the combined feed screw and lateral adjust
  • It is both more sensitive and more accurate than any other adjustment mechanism
  • This plane also overcomes one of the drawbacks of other block planes in having higher side wings (ideal for shooting) with multiple finger grips in each side
  • The combination of accuracy of adjustment and fine machining makes it a pleasure to use
  • With a 20° bed angle and 25° bevel angle, this is the ideal plane for general purposes
  • It has the adjustable mouthpiece and compact size of other block planes
  • With the 6" (152mm) long by 2" (51mm) wide body made from ductile iron, the plane can take hard knocks without cracking
  • All of the machining is done to a high level of accuracy in the Veritas factory
  • The accurately milled sides and sole are now also surface ground to an exceptionally high degree of finish
  • For general-purpose work, the standard block plane is 1/8" taller than the low-angle version and has a 20° bed angle and a low-profile lever cap that fits the hand well
  • The tall side wings are ideal for shooting, and finger grips in the sides improve control
  • The combined blade advance and lateral adjust is the most sensitive, accurate adjustment mechanism available
  • Two guide screws prevent blade shifting
  • The ductile cast iron body can take hard knocks, and the adjustable nosepiece does not extend past the body, so it cannot be driven into the blade if you drop the plane
  • The plane is machined to exacting standards, the milled sides and sole surface ground to a fine finish
  • Each includes a chatterfree 25° blade in PM-V11 tool steel
  • For working difficult wood, lapped 38° and 50° bevel blades are available separately
