Grinding Discs & Cup Grinding Wheels

Grinding discs remove material rapidly from metal, masonry and stone.  Cup grinding wheels are used on angle grinders and concrete grinders to level surfaces and grind edges.  Always select wheels designed for the material and ensure guards are in place.

What are grinding discs and cup wheels used for?
Grinding discs are used with angle grinders for heavy material removal, surface levelling, and edge bevelling in metal fabrication, welding, and construction. Cup grinding wheels are designed for surface grinding on concrete, stone, and masonry, commonly used with concrete grinders for levelling floors, smoothing seams, or removing adhesives and coatings.

What’s the difference between a grinding disc and a cup wheel?
Grinding discs are flat, circular abrasives primarily used for metal applications like weld cleanup or edge shaping. Cup grinding wheels have a bowl or cup-shaped profile that covers a wider surface area, making them better suited for flat or horizontal grinding on concrete or stone. Cup wheels are also often embedded with diamond segments for enhanced performance on hard surfaces.

How do I choose the right grinding disc or cup wheel?

  • Material:

    • Aluminum oxide for general metal grinding

    • Zirconia for stainless steel or tougher metals

    • Diamond cup wheels for concrete, stone, and tile

  • Grit size:

    • Lower grit (16–36) for aggressive removal

    • Higher grit (60+) for smoother finishes

  • Disc size: Match the disc or wheel to your grinder size (e.g. 115 mm, 125 mm, 180 mm)

  • Mounting type: Ensure arbor size and thread type fit your grinder
    Always check the RPM rating, and wear appropriate PPE when grinding.
