Corded Rotary Hammer Drills

Rotary hammer drills deliver higher impact energy via pneumatic pistons, making them suitable for drilling large holes in concrete.  SDS Plus and SDS Max systems offer quick bit changes and improved durability.  Many models have three modes: drill only, hammer only and hammer drill.

What is a rotary hammer drill and how is it different from a standard hammer drill?

Rotary hammer drills use a pneumatic or electro-pneumatic mechanism to deliver much more powerful hammering action than standard hammer drills.

  • Standard hammer drills are great for light masonry work (e.g. drilling into brick or block).

  • Rotary hammer drills are designed for heavy-duty concrete drilling, chiseling, and anchoring tasks—offering higher impact energy (measured in joules) and better performance in reinforced concrete and stone.

What tasks is a corded rotary hammer drill suitable for?

Rotary hammer drills excel at:

  • Drilling large-diameter holes in concrete or stone (for anchors, pipes, cables)

  • Chiseling or demolition work (e.g. tile removal, groove chasing)

  • Breaking up masonry and light concrete
    Thanks to continuous corded power, they're ideal for high-volume or prolonged work on job sites.

What features should I look for in a rotary hammer drill?

Important features include:

  • SDS-Plus or SDS-Max chuck system for fast, secure bit changes

  • Modes: drill only, hammer drill, and hammer only (for chiseling)

  • Impact energy (measured in joules): 2–5 J for SDS-Plus; 5–12 J+ for SDS-Max

  • Side handle with anti-vibration for comfort during tough jobs

  • Variable speed control, soft start, and electronic safety clutch for better user control
    Make sure to match tool size and chuck type to your application: SDS-Plus for lighter, faster drilling; SDS-Max for heavier chiseling or large holes.
