Breakers, Chippers & Demolition Hammers

These heavy duty tools deliver high impact energy to break up concrete, asphalt and masonry.  Demolition hammers feature anti vibration systems and comfortable handles for reduced operator fatigue.  Chipping hammers are ideal for removing tiles and render, while breakers tackle thicker slabs and foundations.

What’s the difference between a breaker, a demolition hammer, and a chipping hammer?

  • Breakers (also called jackhammers) are high-impact tools used for breaking concrete slabs, asphalt, and masonry. They're the largest and most powerful.

  • Demolition hammers are slightly more compact and are used for vertical or overhead demolition—like removing tiles, chasing walls, or breaking up concrete floors.

  • Chipping hammers are lighter tools, ideal for precise removal, such as cleaning welds or removing plaster and tile adhesive.

What factors should I consider when choosing one of these tools?

Key factors include:

  • Impact energy (joules): Higher joules = more breaking power.

    • Chippers: ~2–8 J

    • Demolition hammers: ~8–25 J

    • Breakers: 25 J+

  • Weight and orientation: Use lighter tools for overhead work and heavier ones for ground-level demolition.

  • Bit system: Most use SDS-Max or hex shank bits—check for compatibility.

  • Vibration control and handle comfort are essential for operator fatigue and safety.

Can I use these tools on all types of concrete or masonry?

Yes, but results vary:

  • Chippers are best for surface material and light masonry

  • Demolition hammers can handle cured concrete, brick walls, and medium-duty slabs

  • Breakers are designed for thick concrete slabs, foundations, or pavement
    For best results, always use the correct pointed, flat, tile, or spade chisel for the application and ensure proper PPE is worn.
