Bevel Edged Chisels

Bevel edge chisels taper on the sides to fit into dovetails and tight mortises.  They are versatile all round chisels for paring and chopping.

What are bevel edged chisels used for?
Bevel edged chisels are versatile woodworking tools used for precise joinery, trimming, and fine paring tasks. Their sloped side edges allow access into tight corners and angled joints, making them ideal for dovetails, mortises, and intricate woodwork where clean, controlled cuts are required.

How are bevel edged chisels different from other chisels?
Unlike firmer or mortise chisels, bevel edged chisels have angled sides that taper toward the cutting edge. This design improves access to corners and tight joints, particularly useful in fine cabinetmaking and furniture work. They're generally lighter and more nimble, designed for accuracy over brute strength.

How do I care for and sharpen bevel edged chisels?

  • Maintain a sharp edge using a sharpening stone or honing guide at around 25°–30°

  • Hone regularly to keep the edge razor-sharp for clean paring

  • Use a wooden or plastic mallet, not a metal hammer, to preserve the handle

  • Store chisels with edge guards or in a roll to protect both the tool and user
