Backing & Interface Pads

Backing and interface pads attach to sanders and polishers to provide cushioning and improve abrasive conformability.  Interface pads help sand contoured surfaces without gouging, while backing pads secure sanding discs or polishing bonnets to the tool.

What is the purpose of a backing pad?
A backing pad is attached to the sander or polisher and serves as the mounting surface for sanding discs or polishing pads. It provides firm, even support and helps ensure that abrasives stay securely attached—usually via hook-and-loop (Velcro) or PSA adhesive systems. Backing pads are essential for smooth, controlled sanding or buffing.

What is an interface pad and when should I use one?
An interface pad is a cushioned pad placed between the backing pad and sanding disc. It adds flexibility to the setup, allowing the abrasive to better conform to curved or contoured surfaces. It’s especially useful for final sanding, primer sanding, or working on automotive panels, edges, and delicate materials where a softer touch is required.

How do I choose the right backing or interface pad?
Consider:

  • Pad size (match your tool and abrasive diameter)

  • Attachment type: hook-and-loop is the most common for easy disc changes

  • Pad density: firmer pads are better for aggressive sanding; softer ones for finishing

  • Dust extraction holes: align hole patterns with your sanding discs for optimal dust removal
    Interface pads vary in thickness (commonly 5–10 mm)—thicker for more cushioning, thinner for more control.
