Auger Bits

Auger bits feature screw tips and wide flutes to quickly bore deep holes in wood.  They are ideal for boring through beams, sleepers and timber framing.

What are auger bits used for?
Auger bits are designed for drilling deep, clean holes in wood—especially timber, beams, logs, and joists. Their spiral design efficiently removes chips from the hole, making them ideal for carpentry, joinery, fencing, framing, and electrical or plumbing installations that require long, straight bores.

What makes auger bits different from standard wood drill bits?
Auger bits have a screw point (or lead screw) at the tip that self-feeds into the wood, reducing the effort needed to drill. They also feature:

• Deep flutes for chip ejection

• Spur cutters for cleaner hole edges

• Longer lengths (often 200–600 mm) for deep boring
  Compared to spade or twist bits, augers provide straighter holes with less splintering, especially in softwoods and green timber.

How do I choose the right auger bit?
Consider:

• Bit diameter – ranges typically from 6 mm to 32 mm

• Length – choose based on required hole depth (standard or extended length)

• Shank type – hex shanks for better grip in cordless drills or round shanks for traditional chucks

• Material – HCS (high carbon steel) is common for wood; premium bits may have Teflon coatings for reduced friction
  Use auger bits with low-speed, high-torque drills for best results, especially in hardwood or when using larger diameters.
