BOSCH MITRE SAW GCM12 GDL REVIEW

Once you've experienced the game-changing productivity of a compound mitre saw, it's hard to imagine living without one. However, that largely depends on if you have the space for it! Mitre saws are greedy machines when it comes to gobbling up work space.

This is especially true of sliding mitre saws that occupy even more space thanks to their sliding-bar system. Of course, that's fine if you're in a large factory, but if your workspace is garage-sized, the chances are a sliding mitre saw will feel excessively space-hungry.

And that, right there, is why you need the Bosch GCM12, the "Optimus Prime" of sliding mitre saws.Ā

Dubbed the Bosch Glidesaw, the GCM12 is unlike traditional sliding saws in that it doesn't feature protruding bars that move back and forth. Instead, the Glidesaw sports a patented cantilever system that is so smooth it makes butter seem rough.

As mentioned before, because most sliding mitre saws use a bar system for wider crosscuts, the bars prevent the saw from storing or operating close to a workshop wall. This restriction makes most sliding mitre saws doubly space-hungry.

The Glidesaw, however, can store and operate right up against your workshop wall thanks to its cantilever system that folds in on itself rather than protruding backwards.

Festool and Makita's flagship models feature similar storage capabilities, but in their case, rather than a cantilever system, they use fixed bars that are forward-facing to the user.

It's a practical design; however, because the bars are now facing forward instead of rearward, the width of the crosscut is restricted by the bars not awkwardly getting in the way.

In contrast, the GCM12's Glidesaw system occupies no space at the front or rear of the machine. What's more, it's so incredibly frictionless that you really need to feel it to fully appreciate the operation and concept.

All of this adds up to an ultra smooth, generous board-cutting width of 341mm, but aside from that, the GCM12 features several more qualities that make it a market leader in the mitre saw segment. This includes...

Ā

Dual-Bevel Capability

Dual-Bevel Capability

One of the GCM12's standout features is its dual-bevel capability that allows the blade to tilt in both directions. This means you can cut angles on either side of the workpiece without having to flip it around.Ā

Large Cutting Table

Thanks to sliding extensions on both sides of the table, the GCM12 sports a generous work surface to help stabilise workpieces for guaranteed straighter cuts.Ā

Portable design

Portable design

Despite weighing in at a hefty 32kg, the GCM12 features deep carry handles and the ability to "fold" the machine into a surprisingly compact package. This makes the Bosch Glidesaw remarkably portable for such a large and robust tool.Ā

Dual laser guide

With two lasers outlining the precise position of the blade, the GCM12 provides a clear indication of where the blade will make contact with the material, allowing for confident and precise cuts.Ā

Other features includeā€¦

  • Rated power = 2 000W
  • Blade diameter = 305mm
  • Cutting capacity @ 0Āŗ = 104 x 341mm
  • Cutting capacity @ 45Āŗ mitre = 104 x 240mm
  • Cutting capacity at 45Āŗ bevel = 51 x 341mm
  • Mitre range = 52Āŗ (L) & 60Āŗ (R)
  • Bevel range = 47Āŗ (L) & 47Āŗ (R)Ā

In terms of value, you'd be hard-pressed to find a sliding compound mitre saw that offers the same functionality, features, and innovation as the GCM12. It's the ideal mitre saw for professionals and enthusiasts alike, but it really shines in compact locations where space is limited and versatility is non-negotiable.
