Veritas Router Plane, Large, Closed Throat
The Veritas™ Large Router Plane is the Stanley #71 reborn with truly radical improvements. It is an invaluable tool for work on stopped or through dadoes and grooves, or for any work that requires an area cut to a precise depth. The blade depth is regulated by a fine screw feed that travels 1/32" (0.7938 mm) per turn for precise adjustment, with the resulting depth of cut being controlled by a positive locking depth stop.
Unique to the Veritas™ Large Router Plane is a spring-loaded blade-clamping collar that holds the blade in position when the collar is loosened. It provides tactile feedback, allowing controlled blade adjustment to a depth of 1" (25.4 mm). The collar can also be set to fully release for quick and easy blade removal, for repositioning in front of the post for general work, behind the post for bullnose applications, or laterally (left or right) for work on hinge gains.
Made to the same high standards as all of the Veritas™ planes, the ductile cast iron body has been accurately machined and ground flat. The large Bubinga (African Rosewood) knobs are positioned to provide both comfort and excellent control.
The plane includes two high-carbon steel cutters: a two-piece 1/2" (12.7 mm) straight blade, and a two-piece 1/2" (12.7 mm) spear-point blade (for final smoothing). A blade sharpening jig is also included. The optional fence made of stainless steel and aluminium can be positioned on either side of the plane and will work on both straight and curved pieces. In addition to usage for dadoes or grooves, the Veritas Large Router Plane is the perfect tool for inlay or intarsia work, or for cleaning out areas for hardware installation, where fine control is critical.
The high-carbon steel router plane blades for the Veritas™ Large Router Plane, will also fit the Stanley #71 router planes (with the height-adjustment nut inverted). The narrow single-piece blades are available in five metric sizes (2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm) and five Imperial sizes (1/16", 3/32", 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4"). The 1/2" (12.7 mm) blades have a two-piece design and are available in two styles: straight and spear-point (for final smoothing). The 3/4" (19.05 mm) blade is straight and of a two-piece design. The blade sharpening jig is for use only with the 1/2" (12.7 mm) and 3/4" (19.05 mm) wide blades ( This jig is included with Veritas® Router Planes). Sizes stated are nominal.
